The Zimbabwe Air Rally took flight for the 50th year running at the Kariba International Airport over the weekend, treating revelers and residents to captivating aerobatic displays, with the Tourism ministry confirming welcoming over 170 visitors.
The air rally that first took place in 1974 marking the 50th Anniversary of the rally, this year’s event comprising of 60 aircraft of different makes and sizes, 36 of those being foreign-registered and 24 locals, competing in the first leg of event, with residents from nearby neighbourhoods including Nyamhunga, Mahombekombe, Heights, Baobab Ridge, and Mica Point witnessing the show.
Taking to X, the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality said that the rally boosted the sector with over 170 visitors booking accommodation in the hotels in the area, while also acknowledging the importance of the event to the local communities who witnessed the aerial showcase that involved turn manoeuvres, climbs, slow and rudder rolls.
“The skies over Kariba buzzed with activity as the 50th annual Zimbabwe Air Rally took flight. Sixty aircraft of different makes and sizes, with 36 being foreign-registered and 24 locals, gathered at the Kariba International Airport for the first leg of the event. This marked the 50th anniversary of the rally, which began in 1974.
“The air show captivated the residents of nearby neighborhoods, including Nyamhunga, Mahombekombe, Heights, Baobab Ridge, and Mica Point, who were treated to a spectacular display of aerobatic maneuvers such as turns, climbs, slow and rudder rolls. The event not only boosted the tourism business in Kariba, with hotels accommodating around 170 overnight visitors, but also provided a unique opportunity for the locals to witness the impressive aerial showcase without the need for tickets or permission,” Tourism ministry posted
