Hundreds of enthusiastic young footballers from Chitungwiza converged on the Unit L Ground this past weekend for the inaugural Magaya Sports Tournament. Despite the less-than-ideal state of the playing field, nearly 5,000 spectators came out to witness the next generation of talent showcase their skills.
The event wasn't just about the beautiful game. Government officials, local business leaders, and even former Premier Soccer League stars were present, a testament to the tournament's significant impact.
Nicholas Moyo, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, was impressed by the talent on display. However, he used the platform to highlight the urgent need for improved sports facilities in Chitungwiza, a town brimming with footballing potential.
"The Magaya Tournament perfectly aligns with the government's fight against drug abuse," said Moyo. "By providing healthy outlets like sports, we can significantly contribute to a more positive and productive society. The President has emphasized the collective responsibility of communities, ministries, and the private sector to combat this social ill."
Moyo urged the local council to prioritize investments in sports infrastructure to foster local development.
The tournament, sponsored by local philanthropist Walter Magaya, stemmed from his desire to see Chitungwiza flourish. "My love for Chitungwiza runs deep," Magaya revealed. "That's why I've been pushing relentlessly to improve our football infrastructure."
Magaya then surprised the audience with a personal anecdote. "The construction of the Heart Stadium in Waterfalls? That was built out of frustration," he admitted. "I envisioned a Chibuku Stadium here in Chitungwiza. In fact, I've built stadiums in Maputo and Malawi, and I have plans for Eswatini and Namibia. It all stems from this same frustration!"
The U20 tournament featured 12 teams from across Chitungwiza, with many young players catching the eyes of former PSL stars like David Rediyoni, Valentine Ndaba, Charles Magurashe, and Nicodenus Muramba who were present at the event.
