Tafara Garry Chivasa's sporting story is a testament to dedication, embracing new challenges, and the power of a supportive community. His journey began with cricket, but a passion for athletics has led him to excel in a diverse range of sports, culminating in his recent foray into the world of korfball.
Chivasa's academic background reflects his love for sports. After obtaining a degree in Sports Science and Coaching from NUST, he embarked on a PhD in the UK, all while adding korfball to his ever-growing sporting repertoire.
This newfound passion for korfball wasn't sparked until his Master's studies in the UK. Intrigued by this unique co-ed sport, which combines elements of netball and basketball, Chivasa eagerly began learning the game.
His international korfball journey commenced in the UK with Swansea University's team. He then honed his skills further while training with the highly-regarded KU Leuven team in Belgium. Upon returning to Zimbabwe, he reconnected with his korfball roots by joining DZ Eagles. This reignited passion ultimately led to his involvement with the Zimbabwean national team.
Back in the UK for his PhD studies, Chivasa joined Cardiff City Korfball Club. His impressive performances during the regional league and the Welsh Cup fueled his desire for even greater challenges. This ambition led him to audition for the club's first team, a testament to his unwavering work ethic and natural talent.
Chivasa's experience playing korfball in both Zimbabwe and the UK highlights the significant impact infrastructure and resources have on player development. While Zimbabwean players compensate for technical shortcomings with athleticism and determination, the UK's structured leagues, frequent games, and indoor facilities provide a distinct advantage. He believes that with more equipment and improved technique, the gap between the two regions could narrow.
Cultural and language barriers were non-existent for Chivasa, but adapting to the UK's slower, more strategic style of play proved to be a crucial aspect of his transition. Previously accustomed to the fast-paced, direct approach favored in Zimbabwe, he had to adjust his game to incorporate a greater emphasis on creating opportunities for long-range shots. This experience not only sharpened his strategic thinking but also made him a more well-rounded player.
Chivasa's UK experience has been transformative, not only for his personal growth as an athlete but also for his belief in the potential of Zimbabwean korfball. Exposure to high-level competition and a focus on strategy and tactics have bolstered his confidence. He now envisions Zimbabwe emerging as a force to be reckoned with on the international korfball scene. His unwavering determination to showcase Zimbabwean talent and foster the sport's growth speaks volumes about his passion and dedication.
Representing Zimbabwe on the international stage is an immense honor for Chivasa, inspiring him to excel on the court. This commitment is deeply intertwined with his desire to contribute to the sport's growth within Zimbabwe, with his sights set on the 2027 World Cup. For aspiring players back home, he emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication, urging them to make the most of every training opportunity, even when resources are limited.
While his immediate goals include making the Cardiff City Korfball Club's first team and participating in the prestigious Korfball Champions League, his ambition extends far beyond the court. He is actively involved in promoting beach korfball, hoping to see it gain traction in Zimbabwe.
A cherished memory for Chivasa is his participation in the national team camp at Filchrist Hill Institute. This week-long experience fostered camaraderie, laughter, and a shared love for the sport.
Balancing the demands of a PhD program with a rigorous korfball training schedule requires meticulous time management. Finding a healthy balance between athletics, academics, and personal life, particularly quality time with his wife, is an ongoing challenge that Chivasa is determined to overcome.
