Chimombe denies role in US$9m tender fraud

Businessman Mike Chimombe has vehemently opposed his placement on remand on fresh allegations of using a false document to secure a US$9 million streetlight tender.

Appearing before Harare regional magistrate Stanford Mambanje yesterday, Chimombe, jointly charged with Moses Mpofu, argued through his lawyers, Tapson Dzvetero and Arshiel Mugiya, that there was no evidence linking him to the alleged crime.

The State alleges that Chimombe and Mpofu’s company, Juluka Endo Joint Venture (Pvt) Ltd, submitted fraudulent documents to secure the tender for rehabilitating Harare’s streetlights. However, Chimombe’s legal team contends that the State has failed to establish a prima facie case against their client.

The State, represented by Anesu Chirenje, is expected to file written submissions opposing Chimombe’s application. The matter has been deferred to today for a ruling.
