O Level candidates can breathe a sigh of relief as the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council will nullify results for students found guilty of pre-accessing exam papers and will not be conducting re-writes of leaked exam papers.

In a statement issued Thursday, November 10, the exam board said it had identified and arrested those who had pre-access to the November Ordinary Level question papers.

“The investigation team has arrested a man who fraudulently registered a SIM card line in the name of ZIMSEC Mutare selling fake question papers and certificates masquerading as a ZIMSEC official," reads the statement.

Zimsec says the search for culprits is still ongoing.

“The Police Forensic Unit is currently tracing all candidates who shared the question papers on various platforms including WhatsApp and Telegram. The law is taking its course."

ZIMSEC said a number students, examination administrators and members of the public linked to the leakages were arrested with some set to appear before the courts.

The statement further implies that leakages did not stem from within Zimsec without an outright declaration:

“In light of the above cases and sources identified during these investigations, ZIMSEC has gone further in tightening security wherever question papers are, in transit and in custody pending the writing of the examinations,” reads the statement.

This comes weeks after ZIMSEC had been under fire from stakeholders for widespread question paper leakages.
