Zimbabwe has assumed the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers, marking a significant step towards leading the region's development agenda. The handover ceremony took place at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden as the 44th SADC Summit kicked off.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Ambassador Frederick Shava officially took over from his Angolan counterpart, Honourable Tete Antonio. In his acceptance speech, Shava outlined his vision for the region, emphasizing innovation, industrialization, and economic growth as key drivers of development.

SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi highlighted the progress made in peace, security, and good governance, particularly the successful conclusion of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM). The mission played a crucial role in combating terrorism and creating a secure environment for the return of displaced persons.

Outgoing Chairperson Tete Antonio called for the lifting of sanctions on Zimbabwe, emphasizing its impact on regional integration. He also commended the region's efforts in socio-economic and political development.

As Zimbabwe takes the reins, the country is set to host a series of events leading up to the Heads of State and Government Summit on August 17th. These include a public lecture by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the SADC-BADEA investment forum.

The 44th SADC Summit is expected to focus on promoting innovation to unlock opportunities for sustained economic growth and development towards an industrialized SADC.

With Zimbabwe at the helm, the region is poised for a new chapter of cooperation and development.
