A police officer is facing culpable homicide charges after a horrific road accident claimed the lives of three people and injured 31 others along Seke Road in Harare on Tuesday morning.

Sergeant James Makaranga, stationed at the Police Protection Unit and residing in Chitungwiza, was driving a kombi that collided head-on with another kombi. The accident occurred when Makaranga’s vehicle encroached into the oncoming traffic lane.

Two passengers, Wayne Chipuriro (42) and Pecking Feliati (40), died on impact, while another succumbed to their injuries at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital. The remaining 31 passengers sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to different hospitals for treatment.

Investigations revealed that neither Makaranga nor the driver of the other kombi, Tashinga Chihava (22), possessed a valid driver's license at the time of the accident.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident and indicated that investigations are ongoing.
