Robbers target Harare schools, get away with US$8k

A 42-year-old man, Livingstone Nyikadzino has appeared in court facing armed robbery charges in connection with two separate incidents at Lytton Council Primary School in Kambuzuma and Widcombe Primary School in Hatfield, Harare.

According to the State, Mashiri and his accomplices carried out the first robbery on April 25, 2023, at Lytton Council Primary School. 

The robbers, armed with a rifle and a pistol, confronted the security guard, Ngonidzashe Zvipindu, who was on duty.

 After chasing and assaulting him with iron bars, they tied him up with his shoelaces and covered him with a blanket. They proceeded to break into the headmistress's office, stealing a total of US$3,500 worth of cash, 5 HP laptops, and equipment.

The security guard shouted for help and was untied by the school caretaker who resides at the school cottage. The complainant made a report to the police.

The second robbery took place on April 30 at Widcombe Primary School. Mashiri and his accomplices approached security guards Rindai Muuya and Factory Sinagado, tied them up with ropes.

They were left guarded by one of the accused while the rest forced entry into several offices. They broke into the headmaster's office and stole Redan fuel coupons and US$2,372 in cash, bringing the total value of the stolen goods to US$5,300.

None of the stolen property has been recovered. Mashiri was remanded in custody.
