A horrific accident on the Harare-Bulawayo road has tragically claimed the lives of two people, leaving several others seriously injured.
The accident occurred on Monday at the 75km peg and involved a Blue Circle bus and a stationary truck.
The bus, which was carrying 50 passengers from Harare to Bulawayo, collided with the broken-down truck, which was being attended to by its owner, Ilot Moyo. The impact caused the bus to veer off the road, first to the right and then to the left, before finally stopping after crashing into a tree.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena, confirmed the details: “The first party was the driver of the bus, Owen Tendai Kuvheya, aged 36, and the second party was Ilot Moyo, 45, who was attending to his truck at the 75km peg.
"The bus had 50 passengers on board, traveling from Harare to Bulawayo. Upon reaching the scene, it struck the stationary truck, veered off the road, and only came to a halt after hitting a tree.”
The force of the collision tragically ejected two passengers from the bus, killing them instantly. Another passenger was critically injured and rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment. Moyo, who was working on his truck at the time, sustained injuries to his arm and was also taken to UBH for medical attention.
“Two passengers were thrown from the bus and died on the spot. Another passenger was injured and taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals,” Inspector Mangena added.
The police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine its cause. Inspector Mangena expressed the need for heightened vigilance on the roads, emphasising that this tragic incident highlights the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
"Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives. We wish a speedy recovery to those injured," she said.
