A 49-year-old woman from Binga has been arrested and charged with rape, or alternatively facilitating rape, after tricking her sister into moving to Gwanda under false pretenses.
The victim, who was promised educational opportunities, was instead subjected to repeated sexual abuse by her brother-in-law.
In August 2013, the accused lured her sister to Gwanda, claiming she would enroll her in school. However, upon arrival, she left her alone with her husband for an entire month, paving the way for the abuse to begin.
The victim's brother-in-law revealed the accused's infidelity and his plot to "compensate" him with the victim. The unsuspecting victim was subsequently raped multiple times without her consent.
Even after the accused returned, the rapes continued, sometimes occurring in her presence. The victim was given a red concoction to drink after each assault, further traumatizing her.
In August 2021, the victim finally managed to escape and informed her parents of the horrific ordeal. However, no action was taken at that time. It wasn't until June 17 of this year that the victim filed a police report in Bulawayo.
The accused has been remanded in custody until October 4, facing serious charges related to the sexual abuse of her sister.
