A significant legal victory has been achieved for four Shurugwi residents who were brutally assaulted by Zimbabwe National Army  soldiers during a government-imposed lockdown in 2021.

A judicial officer has convicted Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe, the ZNA Commander, and Defense Minister Hon. Oppah Muchinguri, holding them liable for the soldiers' actions and ordering them to pay substantial compensation.

Grant Zinyuke, Moreblessing Ncube, Batler Jabangwe, and Mavhuto Kachepa filed a lawsuit against Sanyatwe and Muchinguri, alleging that the soldiers' conduct was unlawful and resulted in severe injuries and trauma. The residents argued that the soldiers were acting within their course and scope of employment under the control or instructions of the two officials.

The judicial officer, presiding over the trial at Shurugwi Magistrates Court, found Sanyatwe and Muchinguri vicariously liable for the soldiers' actions. The officials were ordered to pay Zinyuke US$10,000, Mavhuto US$12,000, Jabangwe US$8,000, and Ncube US$8,000 as compensation for damages suffered due to pain and suffering, trauma, nervous shock, and medical expenses.
