In 10 days, the ZIFA Congress will convene in Harare for a pivotal annual general meeting aimed at revitalizing Zimbabwean football after years of turmoil. The meeting, scheduled for October 18, will tackle key issues, including the association's financial statement, audits, and the upcoming ZIFA elections .
At the center of the controversy is Article 38 of the proposed draft constitution, which bars individuals without continuous residency in Zimbabwe for the past two years from contesting the presidency and vice presidency. Additionally, it requires candidates for these positions to have at least five Ordinary Level passes Critics argue that these clauses are discriminatory, targeting former footballers and potentially disenfranchising aspiring candidates.
Enerst Mesa, a social commentator, expressed disappointment, stating, "It's astounding that we have people who want to discriminate against our football legends... Our constitution calls for non-discrimination of any person on any grounds." John Murondi, another critic, emphasized the need for a leader who can "make things happen" and has a passion for football development, regardless of educational background ¹.
Several individuals have expressed interest in the ZIFA presidency, including Marshall Gore, Richard Mazodze, Brighton "Panjap" Ushendibaba, and Philemon Machana. However, Mazodze's chances have been impacted by a match-fixing scandal. Other potential candidates include Twine Phiri, Farai Jere, Alois Bunjira, Charles Mabika, Martin Kweza, and Prophet Walter Magaya
The draft constitution proposes elections by position, rather than through running mates. The board will expand to 11 members, with three women, including one vice president, and the congress membership will increase to 78, incorporating more women's league representatives ¹.
As Zimbabwean football seeks redemption after a two-year FIFA ban, the AGM's outcome will be crucial in shaping the sport's future. Will the congress adopt the proposed constitution, or will amendments be made to address concerns? Only time will tell.
