A Member of Parliament has raised a red flag about the dire financial situation facing teachers in Zimbabwe, highlighting their struggles to afford basic necessities like medical care. Leslie Mhangwa, MP for Chinhoyi, expressed deep concern over the increasing number of teachers who are dying due to an inability to pay medical bills.

Mhangwa's remarks came during a Parliamentary session on World Teachers' Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the vital role teachers play in society. However, the celebration was overshadowed by the stark reality faced by Zimbabwean educators.

With a monthly salary of at least US$200 and ZWL$1200 ZiG, teachers are struggling to make ends meet. Mhangwa recounted his own experience of burying several teachers in his constituency due to their inability to afford medical treatment.

"It is sad for such people who have given themselves to us as a people," Mhangwa said, emphasizing the sacrifices made by teachers. He called on the government to take immediate action to address the teachers' plight and restore their status.

The MP's plea resonated with other lawmakers, who acknowledged the critical role teachers play in shaping the nation's future. The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda, expressed his hope that the establishment of the Professional Teacher's Council would provide a platform to address the issues raised by Mhangwa.
