Vice President Kembo Mohadi Launches NetOne's Historic 5G Network in Harare South

NetOne has officially launched its first-ever 5G network in Harare South, with Vice President Kembo Mohadi presiding over the opening ceremony at Boka Tobacco Auction Floors Wednesday. The event drew various government officials, representatives from POTRAZ, and local artists, including Aleck Macheso, who entertained attendees.

This launch marks the installation of 20 fully operational 5G base stations across key areas in Zimbabwe by NetOne.

During the event, Vice President Mohadi donated 100 computers to ten schools in Harare South and surrounding districts. He emphasized the significance of the 5G network, stating, "The launch of 5G is more than an upgrade in communication infrastructure; it symbolizes our commitment to a digital future that will position Zimbabwe as a key player in the global technological landscape."

In an interview with Zim Now, local residents expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its importance in an increasingly digital world. Many believe it will equip schoolchildren with essential digital skills. However, some raised concerns about a significant challenge: "Most people do not have smartphones capable of utilizing the 5G network," pointing to a barrier in accessing this new technology.

"I commend NetOne for launching 5G, particularly in Harare South, where network coverage was previously inadequate. This development presents a significant opportunity for our community. However, our current mobile devices are incompatible with the 5G network, but we intend to upgrade accordingly," said Constance Debeko, a resident of Harare South.

Others noted, "We have seen a major increase in network usage during the COVID-19 era, when schools migrated to online learning, but the major challenge was network coverage. So, we see it as a great initiative. We have also seen the Vice President, which is a good thing."
