The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has taken a significant step towards strengthening efforts to combat corruption at the local government level by launching the Integrity Committees training programme in Mashonaland Central Province.
The initiative, led by ZACC Chairperson Mr. Michael Reza, brought together local authority leaders who signed Integrity Pledges, committing to uphold ethical standards and fight corruption within their jurisdictions. Mr. Reza emphasized the crucial role of these committees in fostering transparency, accountability, and good governance.
The launch of the programme aligns with the government's vision, outlined in President Mnangagwa's Call to Action Blue Print, which prioritizes modernizing local authority operations and improving service delivery. The blueprint is a cornerstone of Zimbabwe's broader Vision 2030 development agenda, aiming to create a corruption-free and economically prosperous nation.
Integrity Committees will play a vital role in developing anti-corruption policies, promoting ethical conduct, and ensuring accountability through robust monitoring mechanisms. The signing of Integrity Pledges is a symbolic but essential commitment by local leaders to uphold ethical governance and foster community engagement.
Reza stressed the importance of integrity in local governance, urging all local authorities to support the Integrity Committees. He praised ZACC's efforts in implementing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy, which has guided anti-corruption efforts nationwide over the past four years.
The programme launch addressed findings from the 2023 Auditor General's Report, which identified governance challenges in local councils. By supporting Integrity Committees, Mr. Reza expressed optimism that these issues could be mitigated through enhanced oversight and a commitment to ethical leadership.
Reza called upon all stakeholders to act as agents of change, stressing the importance of collective effort in fighting corruption. He encouraged officials to lead by example, reminding them that every act of integrity strengthens the nation's progress toward its development goals.
The Integrity Committees training programme will continue across other provinces in Zimbabwe as ZACC remains committed to creating a governance system rooted in fairness, transparency, and integrity.
