In a major milestone for Zimbabwe's education sector, President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially commissioned the Bindura University of Science Technology's  School of Optometry and Auditory. This significant development addresses the long-standing gap in training for optometrists and audiologists in the country and region.

The school's establishment is a culmination of years of planning and vision, and President Mnangagwa hailed the commissioning as a fulfillment of a long-awaited desire to establish a key institution . Dr. Claudio Mutuwa, Chairman of the Department of Optometry and a practicing optometrist, shared that 35 students  graduated from the school of optometry this Friday, marking a significant step forward for the institution.

The university's optometry clinic has been attending to an impressive average of 120 patients per month, demonstrating the institution's commitment to community service. With the commissioning, the school will now produce spectacles on site, further enhancing its capacity to serve the community.

The local training of optometrists is expected to bolster the staff complement at public hospitals, addressing a critical need in Zimbabwe's healthcare sector. This development is a testament to the government's focus on education and healthcare.

In addition to the School of Optometry and Auditory, President Mnangagwa also commissioned a student dining hall at the Bindura University campus, underscoring the government's commitment to providing conducive learning environments.

Bindura University has undergone significant growth, with its student population now at 7,000 . The institution's focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields aligns with the government's vision for economic development.

This milestone marks a significant step forward for Zimbabwe's education and healthcare sectors, and we can expect even greater achievements from Bindura University in the years to come.
