In a landmark ruling, a Peruvian court has sentenced former President Alejandro Toledo to 20 years and six months in prison for corruption and money laundering. Prosecutors alleged Toledo accepted $35 million in bribes from Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht to secure a road contract.

Toledo, president from 2001 to 2006, was arrested in California and extradited to Peru last year. Odebrecht admitted to paying millions in bribes across Latin America and the US.

Judge Inés Rojas emphasized Toledo's betrayal of public trust, stating he "defrauded the state." Toledo denied charges, displaying defiance throughout proceedings.

This verdict follows a string of high-profile corruption cases in Peru, including former President Alan García's tragic death during arrest and ongoing investigations into Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Ollanta Humala's ties to Odebrecht.
