Computers, laptops and printers from Coventry College’s recently closed Henley Campus have been refurbished and sent to Chimurenga Primary School through SawiTech’s digital equipment rehabilitation initiative.

SawiTECH, wipes out data on the equipment then installs updated programmes to ensure that when businesses upgrade their equipment, they are not simply adding to e-waste.

Instead the SawiTech helps organisations and businesses improve their corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

“We work with a range of schools and colleges and are looking at ways we can help more local businesses make a real difference to the planet by cutting down on synthetic waste and using their position of privilege to give back to those who might be without computer access,” said SawiTECH asset recovery manager Peaceful Chimbwanda.

Chimurenga Primary School in Village 10, Ward 25, Nyadire, Mutoko is a recent beneficiary of the programme after it received equipment from Coventry College.

The Mutoko school also received scanners and projectors from the Henley Campus, which closed last year.

The college used Coventry business SawiTECH to wipe the hard drives of the equipment.

The firm takes its name from an abbreviation of ‘Sahwira’, meaning best friend in the Shona language.

Peaceful Chimbwanda hopes that more colleges, schools and businesses in the region will support the project to improve education access in Africa.

“The more equipment we receive, the better chance we have of reaching more locations across the likes of Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania,” said Chimbanda.

Coventry college vice principal for business growth, engagement and partnerships Gemma Knott said hoped the equipment will be extremely beneficial to children in Zimbabwe.
