The City of Harare’s Northern Region Division One side, Harare City FC, on Sunday silenced the cacophony of unfounded rumors that had tarnished their reputation.
Despite a 3-1 loss to Scottland at Mkushi Stadium, the team displayed unwavering determination and nearly pulled off a stunning upset. The match was a thrilling encounter, with Harare City holding their own against the formidable opponents.
Prior to the match, malicious and defamatory reports circulated on social media, alleging that Harare City FC officials had been bribed to throw the game. These baseless claims were met with swift condemnation.
His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Jacob Mafume, along with Finance Director Godfrey Kusangaya and other senior officials, attended the match to show their unwavering support for the team. Their presence and words of encouragement undoubtedly boosted the players' morale.
Harare City FC took the field with a defiant spirit, determined to prove the naysayers wrong. They fought tooth and nail, pressing high, defending resolutely, and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
After the match, Scottland boss, Scott Sakupwanya, paid tribute to Harare City FC's performance. He acknowledged the intense pressure his team faced, stating, "Your Worship, your team almost killed me with blood pressure. It's as if they were playing to gain promotion themselves. They are professional. I have never been under pressure like this the whole season."
Stanley Gama, the City of Harare's Corporate Communications Manager, who also witnessed the match firsthand, expressed his outrage at the baseless accusations. He emphasized the City's unwavering commitment to integrity and fair play.
"It's absolutely absurd to suggest that our officials were involved in any wrongdoing. The team's performance today speaks for itself. They fought with honor and dignity. While the result may not have been in their favor, their spirit and determination were truly inspiring," Gama stated.
