The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board has taken significant steps to bolster tobacco production in the 2024/25 season by partnering with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company . This collaboration aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply for farmers, a crucial factor in maximizing yields and quality.
The strategic move is part of TIMB's broader vision to elevate the tobacco industry to a US$60 billion sector by 2028. By addressing critical challenges like power supply and input costs, TIMB seeks to stimulate growth and improve the livelihoods of tobacco farmers.
To further support farmers, TIMB has also secured discounted coal supplies, a key resource for tobacco curing. Through partnerships with suppliers like Hwange Colliery, farmers can now access coal at a significantly reduced price, saving them substantial costs.
“The 2023/24 season was the maiden year of the programme, and 5 319 tonnes of coal were procured through the initiative. This translated to approximately US$100 000 in savings,” TIMB stated.
These initiatives are not only aimed at reducing production costs but also at improving the overall sustainability of the tobacco industry. By promoting the use of alternative curing fuels, TIMB is contributing to environmental conservation and mitigating the impact on forests.
The board's efforts align with the Tobacco Value Chain Transformation Plan and Rural Development 8.0, which seek to empower farmers, create jobs, and drive economic growth. By providing essential support and resources, TIMB is empowering farmers to make informed decisions and adopt sustainable practices.
