Ethel Precious Tapiwa Chinyerere is a name that resonates with resilience, determination, and exceptional talent both on and off the football field. At just 28 years old, Ethel has made a significant impact not only in Zimbabwean football but also as a dedicated Airwoman with the rank of Sergeant. Her journey from playing street football with her brothers to becoming one of the most celebrated figures in Zimbabwe’s women’s football is a testament to her unwavering spirit and passion.
Ethel’s love for football began at the age of four when she would join her brothers in street games. By the time she attended Mkoba 4 Primary School, her natural skills had already set her apart. Between Grade 4 and 6, she played in the boys’ team, where her speed, tenacity, and raw talent quickly caught the attention of local coaches. Despite societal norms discouraging girls from pursuing football, Ethel's determination only intensified.
Her formal football career began with Chipembere Queens, where she honed her skills under the guidance of Coach Gorvener. In 2013, she joined Chapungu FC, one of the top women’s football teams in Zimbabwe. She moved to Herentals FC in 2017, but by 2020, she returned to Chapungu, where she continues to excel. Through her dedication, Ethel has broken stereotypes, proving that women can thrive in a sport traditionally dominated by men.
Ethel's career in football is decorated with numerous accolades. She has helped Chapungu win five trophies, each one reflecting her commitment and skill. Her individual accomplishments are just as impressive. In 2022, she was crowned Top Goal Scorer, a recognition that solidified her position among the top players in Zimbabwean women’s football. 2024 has been a particularly standout year for Ethel, as she was named both Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Heart Tournament.
She also received September’s FUZ Player of the Month award and was named COSAFA Player of the Match in the game against Lesotho.
Despite these remarkable achievements, Ethel remains humble. For her, each goal, each title, and each award represents countless hours of practice, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in her abilities. “Train hard to play easy,” she often says, embodying the work ethic that has defined her career.
Growing up, Ethel faced significant challenges. “Nobody believed that a girl could play football,” she recalls. In a society where girls were often discouraged from pursuing sports, her dreams were met with doubt and skepticism. But Ethel's resolve never wavered. “I’ve always worked hard, hoping that one day it would pay off,” she says. This mindset has fueled her success. To young athletes facing similar hurdles, her message is simple yet powerful: “Say no to drugs and never give up on your dreams.”
Beyond football, Ethel’s achievements are equally impressive. In 2018, she joined the Zimbabwe Air Force, where she now holds the rank of Sergeant. Balancing a demanding football career with a military role is no easy task, yet Ethel manages both with grace and dedication. Her dual commitment to serving her country in the military while excelling in sports is a testament to her versatility and ambition.
As she continues to break barriers, Ethel has become a role model for young girls, both in Zimbabwe and beyond. Her story is one of perseverance, strength, and resilience. With her remarkable achievements both on the field and in her military career, Ethel is paving the way for the next generation of female athletes and leaders.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that with hard work, determination, and self-belief, no dream is out of reach.
