Nqobile Magwizi, a board member of Banket United Football Club, has emphasized the need for increased investment in sporting infrastructure and improved player welfare in Zimbabwean football.
Magwizi, who was speaking during an end-of-year award ceremony hosted by Banket United Football Club, highlighted the importance of a whole-of-society approach to improving sporting facilities across the country.
"We are faced with the scourge of drug and substance abuse, especially among the youths," Magwizi said. "We have realized that sports is a viable vehicle to drive the youths out of this menace. That has been the motivation towards ensuring that Banket United survives."
Magwizi also emphasized the need for partnerships that identify and nurture talents. "We need to seek partnerships that can help us develop our players and improve our facilities," he said.
Coach Robert Mukombwe and Captain Fisher Mulalanji of Banket United Football Club also shared their insights on the need for investment in sporting infrastructure and improved player welfare.
"The beauty of these community-led clubs is that they inspire a sense of ownership," said Coach Mukombwe. "We need the community to invest in the grounds which we use, the allowances which we give our players, so that we can lure them to sports and drive them away from the scourge of drug and substance abuse."
"We finished 12th, which was not a bad position given the challenges we faced," said Captain Mulalanji. "We have just four senior players, and the rest are passionate local youths who join and leave. This reflects the need to secure sponsorship so that players do not join rival clubs offering better remuneration."
