The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association has unveiled a strategic plan to tackle the growing waste management crisis in Bubi District, Matabeleland North. This initiative addresses concerns over environmental degradation and public health risks stemming from inadequate waste disposal systems.

In collaboration with local authorities, community stakeholders, and environmental experts, ZELA has devised a comprehensive five-year climate-resilient solid waste management strategy. The plan integrates climate adaptation measures to ensure waste systems remain effective in the face of challenges like flooding and extreme weather.

According to ZELA a communique, the initiative aims to create a sustainable framework for managing waste in the district, which has been grappling with rising waste accumulation due to urbanization and insufficient infrastructure. The proposed plan includes the implementation of a five-year climate-resilient solid waste management strategy that incorporates climate adaptation measures. This approach will help ensure that waste management systems remain effective amid challenges such as flooding and extreme weather conditions.

“Developing a 5-year Climate-Resilient Solid Waste Management strategy that adapts to challenges like flooding and extreme weather, ensuring waste systems stay effective amidst climate change. Promoting sustainable waste reduction with climate-smart recycling programs that cut down greenhouse gas emissions and ease landfill pressures by embracing circular economy practices.”

Additionally, ZELA aims to promote sustainable waste reduction programs that focus on climate-smart recycling initiatives designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate pressure on landfills. By adopting circular economy practices, these programs will encourage community involvement in waste reduction efforts.

A monitoring system will also be established to evaluate the effectiveness of solid waste management initiatives over time. This framework will focus on tracking risks, assessing mitigation strategies, and ensuring the resilience of waste management systems. Importantly, the strategy will align with Zimbabwe’s National Adaptation Plan and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the commitment to broader sustainability objectives.

ZELA’s initiative emphasizes community engagement as a cornerstone of its approach. Local residents are encouraged to participate actively in identifying challenges and co-developing solutions that reflect their needs and circumstances.
