An inmate already serving a rape sentence has been handed an additional 20 years behind bars for sodomising a fellow prisoner at Harare Remand Prison, bringing his total jail term to 22 years.
Emmanuel Magede, who was serving 10 years for rape, had initially been jailed for 12 years, with two years suspended for five years on condition of good behavior.
Magistrate Letwin Rwodzi revoked the suspended sentence, leaving Magede to serve a total of 22 years.
In passing sentence, the magistrate emphasised the trauma suffered by the victim and stressed that aggravated indecent assault would not be tolerated in prison.
She added that inmates’ rights must be protected.
The court also noted that Magede showed no remorse, particularly in light of his recent conviction for raping a minor.
The prosecution, led by Loveit Muringwa, proved that on July 23, 2025, around midday, Magede sodomised the complainant while they were bathing at Harare Remand.
Witness Tinashe Muyambo caught him in the act through the open bathroom door, prompting Magede to withdraw.
Muyambo alerted fellow inmate Antony Chambarambanda, who in turn reported the matter to prison officer Tafadzwa Nembaware. A police report was subsequently filed, leading to Magede’s arrest.
The complainant was medically examined, and a medical affidavit was presented in court as evidence confirming the assault.
