Martin Kweza, the visionary behind the transformation of Northern Region Division 1 into a professional football powerhouse, has become a pivotal figure in Zimbabwean football. As chairperson of Northern Region Division 1, Kweza has played a crucial role in elevating the league's standards, turning it into a breeding ground for emerging talent.
“This was a trial run. We wanted to showcase that football can be professionalised. We saw it in other jurisdictions but its success hinges on the development of the grassroots,” Kweza said, adding, “Now that the results are there, we are taking the experiment a gear up and push for the same investments in the premier league and national teams.”
Kweza also said Zimbabwean football has the potential to be revived if its apex is in the hands of the right people.
“We have great potential as a football nation. We just need the right people with clear strategic leadership qualities at the apex. This coming election is a defining moment for Zimbabwean football.”
Kweza's vision extends well beyond the Northern Region Division 1. He firmly believes that investing in grassroots and junior football is essential for the sport's overall growth in Zimbabwe. This philosophy is exemplified by the rise of teams like Simba Bhora, which have ascended through the ranks to become significant contenders in Zimbabwean football.
Under Kweza's leadership, the Northern Region Division 1 has experienced remarkable enhancements, including increased sponsorship and media attention. The league now serves as a vital platform for young players to display their skills, many of whom have moved on to represent top-tier teams in Zimbabwe.
Kweza's dedication to grassroots football has garnered him respect within the Zimbabwean football community. His efforts have inspired a new generation of players, coaches, and administrators who are passionately promoting the sport in their localities. Notably, Kweza is among those who have submitted their CVs for the ZIFA Presidential position.
As Zimbabwean football continues to evolve, Kweza's impact will undoubtedly be significant. His commitment to developing the sport from the grassroots level will serve as a model for future success. With leaders like Kweza steering the ship, the future of Zimbabwean football appears more promising than ever.
