Gilbert Muponda has withdrawn his candidacy for the Zimbabwe Football Association presidency, throwing his weight behind business executive Nqobile Magwizi. Muponda's endorsement has bolstered Magwizi's chances, citing him as "the most qualified and deserving candidate" to revive local football.

Magwizi, a renowned businessman with a strong track record in football administration, has been gaining momentum in the ZIFA presidential race. His experience in mobilizing resources for the sport and his clean record make him an attractive candidate.

The ZIFA presidency is up for grabs, with eight candidates vying for the top post. These include Prophet Walter Magaya, Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairperson Farai Jere, politician Temba Mliswa, and former PSL boss Twine Phiri, among others.

As nominations for ZIFA posts close today, the focus shifts to the vetting process, with eligible candidates set to be announced on December 23. The elections will take place on January 25 next year.

In the running for the ZIFA vice-presidency are former ZIFA vice-presidents Omega Sibanda and Gift Banda, although Banda's chances are uncertain following his arrest for allegedly forging an Ordinary Level certificate. Other contenders include Highlanders board member Peter Dube, former Bosso vice-chairperson Modern Ngwenya, and PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele.

The women's quota for the vice-presidency has attracted several candidates, including former Ngezi Platinum Stars chief executive officer Nyasha Kadenge, former ZIFA board member Mavis Gumbo, and ex-Caps United administrator Joyce Kapota.
