A Botswana-registered haulage truck ploughed into a herd of cattle along the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo highway killing nine beasts.
The incident happened in Chimwara area at a depression between Halfway and Gwayi river around 6pm on Wednesday and the herd was crossing the highway from a nearby water source.
The truck, which was headed towards Bulawayo, managed to stop on the side of the road a few metres from the scene while villagers spent the night guarding the carcasses, waiting for the police.
The owners of the cattle is yet to be identified but the was meat galore as some of the meat was sold to travellers and villagers.
The Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road is one of the most dangerous to drive on at night, especially the stretch between Umguza and Fatima because of the heavy presence of livestock, which includes cattle, donkeys and goats.
The area between Mbizha and Matetsi along the same road also has elephants which roam about and in April this year, a CAG bus that was travelling from Victoria Falls to Harare ploughed into a herd of the huge beasts.
In 2019, another bus hit a herd of buffaloes in Lubangwe, while reports of donkeys and cattle being hit and killed by vehicles along the highway are common.
