In a week filled with celebration and achievement, Banket United Board member Nqobile Magwizi has made headlines after graduating with a Master's in Philosophy in Development Finance (Mphildevfinance) from the prestigious Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Magwizi's academic achievement is a testament to his dedication to education and his passion for football development.
But Magwizi wasn't the only one celebrating a major milestone. Technology entrepreneur and investor Strive Masiyiwa, a pioneer of the mobile telecommunications sector in Africa, received an honorary doctorate in Engineering from Stellenbosch University on the same day. Masiyiwa's visionary leadership has helped to cement Africa's telecoms industry and business sector, while his philanthropy has improved socioeconomic development to the benefit of the continent's people.
However, what has drawn the interests of the football stakeholders is Magwizi's dissertation, titled "Sport Participation and Economic Growth: The Case of Sub-Saharan Countries and the Impact of Performance in the Africa Cup of Nations Tournament,"
This is a groundbreaking study that explores the relationship between sports participation and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The research also delves into the impact of performance in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament on economic growth.
As a seasoned football administrator, Magwizi brings a wealth of experience to the table. He has spent years working in junior and development football in remote areas such as Gokwe and Banket. His work in these communities has given him a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing football development in Zimbabwe.
"We are extremely proud of Nqobile's achievement," said a spokesperson for Banket United. "His dedication to education and football development is an inspiration to us all. We look forward to seeing the impact of his research on the sports sector in Zimbabwe and beyond."
Magwizi's academic achievement is not only a personal milestone but also a significant contribution to the field of sports development. His research has the potential to inform policy and decision-making in the sports sector, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
As for Masiyiwa, his honorary doctorate is a recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of engineering and his impact on the African continent. "The Faculty is humbled that Mr Masiyiwa accepted this honorary doctorate in Engineering from Stellenbosch University," said Prof Wikus van Niekerk, Dean of the SU Faculty of Engineering. "He is an exemplary example of an African who did well and is now doing good by improving the lives of many Africans
