In an exclusive interview, Vimbai Rose, a talented musician based in the United Kingdom, opens up about her journey, her music, and the enduring legacy of her father, the late reggae legend Culture T.
Vimbai's sound is a unique blend of alternative R&B and Neo-Soul, with a soulfulness that is both captivating and authentic. "I was always around music growing up because my dad was a musician," she recalls. "I always loved writing little songs and poems, so I'd actually say that my love for writing came before singing."
Growing up in the UK, Vimbai's connection to her Zimbabwean roots was fostered by her family. "Being born and raised in the UK, I'm blessed enough to have had my mother and family make sure that we learnt and understood Shona as children," she explains. "Also having Zimbabwean music played in the car and at parties growing up, it definitely helped me feel a direct connection to my Zimbabwean roots."
Vimbai's latest project, SILVA LINING, is a testament to her growth as an artist and her commitment to her craft. "October 2023, my brother's son, Silva was born," she shares. "At this time, it felt like I could finally see the silver lining and light at the end of the tunnel in my music journey after doubting myself for so long."
As the daughter of Culture T, Vimbai is conscious of the legacy she carries. "My father's legacy continues to impact the Zimbabwean music scene through his timeless sound and powerful lyrics," she says. "Great music lasts forever and will always have an impact."
Vimbai's music is not only a tribute to her father's legacy but also a reflection of her own unique experiences and perspectives. "I wouldn't say that I feel pressure, I'm more so inspired with how much my dad achieved in his short 37 years on earth," she says. "I definitely feel like it's my duty to finish what he started and forge my own path."
As Vimbai Rose continues to make waves in the music industry, she remains committed to her art and her heritage.
"I think that mixing English and Shona into my future songs will definitely help promote Zimbabwe in a way where people singing along to a catchy hook even if it's in a language they don't understand, it will lead to genuine curiosity to research more about Zimbabwean culture and our languages."
With a bright future ahead of her, Vimbai Rose is poised to take the music world by storm. As she so eloquently puts it, "If you're just doing it for money, don't do it. Do it because you LOVE IT so that you can put your all into your goals."
