The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) today held the Tolerance Poster Exhibition in Harare to mark the International Day for Tolerance.

The International Day for Tolerance is traditionally held on November 16 annually since its inception in 1995 and aims to promote the spirit of tolerance and non-violence in society.

The day is specifically recognised to educate people about the harmful consequences of intolerance on society and its impact on the nation.

One of the designers, Mwalimu Saki Mafundikwa, said it is important for modern-day society to tolerate the next person and respect their choices without prejudice.

“We might not necessarily accept other people’s choices but we should be able to tolerate each other.

“In a world where there is so much difference, tolerance is the only way to establish harmony in society. We should tolerate other people’s religion, ethnicity and music,” he said.

NGZ spokesperson Tendai Sauta said a society where each person is respected is one that has been built on the foundation of tolerance.

“Since there is diversity of individuals, only tolerance can guarantee the existence of mixed communities all over the world in the current era of globalisation.

“The world was not built to be monolithic but rather each person has a range of skills and disciplines,” he said.
