Earthquake hits Kariba

A moderate 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Kariba, Zimbabwe, early today (Monday 23) morning at 5:39 AM local time.

volcanodiscovery.com reports that the quake's epicenter, located at a depth of 10 km, was about 17 km southeast of Kariba and close to the Zambian border.

“I feel shaking of the building, And with some plates in the kitchen was shaking so much,” said one person who reported from the epicentre.

“Felt like wave movement underneath,” a person in Mahombekombe reported.

Local residents reported minor tremors in both countries, with no significant damage or casualties have been reported.

The shaking was classified as "moderate" near the epicenter, with light to weak tremors felt in nearby towns, including Kariba

Preliminary data from the United States Geological Survey estimated the seismic energy released to be equivalent to 338 tons of TNT.



 

This is the second earthquake to hit Zimbabwe this year after a minor one occured in Manicaland in July.

Online specialist sites say that minor earthquakes are common as the earth shifts and mostly go unremarked and cause little or no damage.
