Hospital Worker Gets 20 Months for Fake Job Scam

A 54-year-old Bulawayo hospital worker has been sentenced to an effective 20 months in prison after defrauding a colleague of US$500 by falsely promising to secure a job for her brother.

Amukela Nkiwane, of Cowdray Park, was convicted of fraud by the Bulawayo Magistrates' Court.

The court heard that in January 2026, Nkiwane, who was employed at Ingutsheni Hospital, approached fellow employee Simango Khanyisa, 41, claiming he could arrange employment for her younger brother.

Believing the offer, Khanyisa paid him US$500.

She later discovered that Nkiwane had neither the authority nor the ability to secure jobs at the hospital and reported the matter to the police.

Nkiwane was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Six months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.

A further four months were suspended on condition that he pays US$500 in restitution to the complainant.

He will serve an effective 20-month prison term.
