The Zimbabwe Republic Police has expressed serious concern over the alarming number of murder cases reported during the festive season.
According to a press statement released on December 27, 47 murder cases were recorded across the country between December 20 and December 26, 2024.
The ZRP highlighted that most of these cases arose from disputes at beer-drinking events, sporting activities, and family or community gatherings.
Other causes include attacks by unknown assailants at night, acts of revenge, fights over romantic relationships, and misunderstandings among groups.
Two chilling incidents that occurred on Christmas Day were detailed in the statement.
In Mwenezi, Triangle, a 22-year-old man, Mastard Chauke, had a misunderstanding with Tongai Moyo during a beer-drinking spree at Machipisa tuckshops. In a fit of rage, Chauke threw a stone intended for Moyo, but it struck a bystander, Ostern Mangaru, 29, in the chest. Mangaru collapsed and died on the spot.
In another incident in Shurugwi, a 36-year-old man, Learnmore Mudzengi, stabbed Sydney Mudzengi ,21, in the chest with a Columbian knife at Musavezi Business Centre. The altercation stemmed from a missing token during a pool game. After the stabbing, the suspect fled the scene.
The ZRP has urged the public to exercise restraint and resolve disputes amicably, especially during gatherings and celebrations.
Police continue to investigate these cases and are appealing for community cooperation to bring perpetrators to justice.
As Zimbabweans reflect on the tragic loss of life this festive season, the ZRP reiterates its commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
