The South African government has ramped up security measures along its border with Mozambique in response to escalating unrest in the neighboring country. These efforts aim to prevent cross-border crimes and maintain regional stability as tensions in Mozambique rise.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints) confirmed on Sunday that it had intensified operations due to the ongoing violence, which has resulted in 33 fatalities and the escape of more than 1,500 prisoners.
The heightened measures come as Mozambique approaches its presidential inauguration, a period expected to further strain security.
“These developments have understandably caused concern among South African citizens about potential spillover effects,” NatJoints said in a statement. “South Africa remains committed to safeguarding its citizens and fostering regional stability.”
South Africa and Mozambique are actively collaborating to address the crisis. Bilateral talks aim to establish sustainable solutions while leveraging the strong diplomatic ties between the nations.
“These engagements reflect the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that underpins the relationship between South Africa and Mozambique,” the statement added.
The South African government has urged its citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could incite unnecessary panic. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates.
In a move to underscore South Africa’s commitment to resolving the crisis, President Cyril Ramaphosa has dispatched Professor Sydney Mufamadi as a special envoy to Mozambique. Mufamadi’s mission is to engage stakeholders and help mediate a resolution to the political impasse stemming from Mozambique’s disputed elections.
Citizens are encouraged to direct concerns to official channels for accurate information and constructive engagement.
As South Africa tightens border security and boosts diplomatic efforts, the region remains on high alert, with hopes of a peaceful resolution to the unrest.
