Indonesia Joins BRICS Bloc as Full Member

Zim Now Writer

Indonesia has officially joined BRICS as a full member, Brazil’s government announced on Monday. The inclusion of Indonesia, the world’s fourth-most populous nation, expands the bloc of major emerging economies, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Brazil, holding the BRICS presidency in 2025, stated that member countries unanimously approved Indonesia's membership as part of an expansion plan outlined during the 2023 summit in Johannesburg.

Although Indonesia’s bid was approved in 2023, the country opted to finalize its membership after last year's presidential election. Prabowo Subianto, who assumed office in October, now represents Indonesia in the bloc.

"Indonesia shares the BRICS commitment to reform global governance institutions and deepening cooperation within the Global South," said the Brazilian government in a statement.

Indonesia's membership strengthens its efforts to advocate for emerging economies and align with BRICS goals of promoting Global South cooperation.

The bloc has expanded significantly in recent years, with other new members including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
