Government ramps up effort to rescue trapped Mudzi miners

 

Family members of the three illegal miners trapped in a disused gold mine in Makaha, Mudzi district, are clinging to hope as rescue efforts continue ZBC News has reported.

The trio has been trapped underground for three days following heavy rains that caused the mine to collapse.

“My brother and cousins are all trapped underground, and I am appealing to well-wishers to assist with whatever they can so that we find them,” a distressed relative shared at the scene.

Another family member, who traveled from Gokwe to assist, said, “I am the father of two of those trapped, and I am hoping we find them alive.”

Villagers have also been gathering at the site, spending their days waiting for updates and praying for good news.

Concerned community members described the situation as heartbreaking, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention.

Efforts to locate the miners intensified on Tuesday with a government delegation, traditional leaders, and representatives from the mining community visiting the site.

The Chairperson of the Provincial Civil Protection Unit led the delegation, signaling the gravity of the incident.

Speaking to ZBC News, the Permanent Secretary of Mashonaland East Province, Mr. Tavabarira Kutamahufa, said, “As government, we have stepped up efforts to locate the miners in whatever state, and we are calling for assistance to beef up our resources.”

Chief Nehombo echoed these sentiments, stating, “This is a very unfortunate incident in our area, and we are hoping that our rescue operations will yield positive results.”

Mining representative Mr. Mudyiwa Mashonganyika added, “As miners, this is a very unfortunate incident, and we are pooling our resources together as we seek to identify where the guys could be.”

The community remains united in their hope for a successful rescue mission. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
