The Environmental Management Agency has ordered the immediate closure of Cambria 4 Mine in Masvingo after a tailings dam spill polluted the Shashe River, killing fish and livestock in surrounding areas.
The mine has been directed to halt operations and comply with an environmental protection order mandating the implementation of pollution control measures.
EMA is monitoring water quality in the Shashe River, with samples collected for analysis.
Amkela Sidange, EMA's Environmental Education and Publicity Manager, confirmed that the spill occurred after heavy rainfall caused the failure of an emergency trench meant to contain overflow from the mine’s tailings dam.
“The mine has been issued a ticket and an environmental protection order to cease operations until all recommendations from the Agency are fully implemented to address the accidental discharge and suspected pollution,” said Sidange.
“The mine is also required to establish pollution abatement measures.”
EMA is conducting daily water quality assessments to determine the extent of contamination and its impact on the ecosystem. Local residents are reportedly concerned about long-term effects on their livelihoods, as the river is a key resource for the community.
Further investigations are underway to assess the full scale of environmental damage.
