UK Signs Historic 100-Year Partnership Agreement with Ukraine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has signed a groundbreaking 100-year partnership agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking a significant commitment to Ukraine’s future security and prosperity.

During an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Starmer assured Zelensky that the UK’s support for Ukraine would endure far beyond the ongoing war with Russia. "We are with you, not just today or tomorrow, but for 100 years – long after this terrible war is over and Ukraine is free and thriving once again," Starmer said.

The landmark agreement focuses on defense cooperation, particularly maritime security in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and Sea of Azov. It also includes joint projects in technology, such as drones, and measures to track stolen Ukrainian grain exported by Russia from occupied territories. Additionally, the UK pledged £40 million ($79 million) to support Ukraine's economic recovery.

The partnership extends to energy, critical minerals, and green steel production, aiming to strengthen Ukraine’s infrastructure and economy in the long term.

Starmer's visit to Kyiv comes amidst heightened diplomatic activity among Ukraine's allies. Italian and German defense chiefs recently visited Ukraine, while French President Emmanuel Macron has also been in discussions with Zelensky. These efforts reflect a coordinated European stance as the war nears its three-year mark.

The timing of the agreement is crucial, as former US President Donald Trump prepares to return to office with a proposed peace plan that may alter America’s role in the conflict. European leaders are moving swiftly to reinforce Ukraine’s position ahead of any potential negotiations.

Zelensky expressed concern over Trump's plan, which could demand concessions such as territorial losses. "We must ensure that any peace guarantees Ukraine's independence and security," Zelensky said.

Starmer acknowledged the importance of US support but emphasized the UK’s commitment. "We will continue to work with the US and our allies to ensure Ukraine’s security and independence," he said.

Starmer and Zelensky’s meeting underscored the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine. As they spoke, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a Russian drone over
