UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure from across party lines, as 221 MPs from nine political parties have signed a joint letter urging immediate UK recognition of a Palestinian state before next week’s UN conference.

Senior cabinet ministers—including Deputy PM Angela Rayner and Ministers Yvette Cooper, Wes Streeting, and Shabana Mahmood—also support early recognition, intensifying internal demands on the Labour leader.

While Starmer affirms support for Palestinian statehood in principle, he insists recognition must be well‑timed and part of a wider strategy—anchored in a ceasefire, hostage returns, and humanitarian aid access—before advancing toward a two‑state solution.

The situation is complicated by France’s announcement that it will recognize Palestine at the UN in September, making Paris the first G7 country to do so and raising expectations that the UK should follow suit.
