Rising Above Adversity: Rumbie’s Journey as a Social Worker

Rumbie’s path to social work was forged through personal trials that could have easily broken her spirit. Orphaned at a young age and living with a leg discrepancy, her childhood was marked by challenges that many would find insurmountable.

Yet, these very hardships became the foundation of her purpose—to advocate for women and girls facing similar struggles.

“I grew up feeling overlooked,” Rumbie reflects.

“My disability, combined with losing my parents, made me acutely aware of how society neglects its most vulnerable. But these experiences also instilled in me a determination to make a difference.”

Her journey into social work began with a desire to address systemic inequities, particularly those affecting women and girls. She was inspired by her experiences of exclusion and the lack of access to basic necessities like sanitary pads during her teenage years—a painful reality she vowed to change for others.

Rumbie’s career has been defined by impactful initiatives. Among her proudest achievements is organising a large-scale campaign against gender-based violence. This week-long effort connected with over 2,500 community members, providing resources, counseling, and safe spaces for survivors.

For many, it was a lifeline that offered both immediate support and hope for a better future.

Her efforts haven’t come without challenges. As a young woman in social work, Rumbie has faced emotional burnout, bureaucratic barriers, and limited resources. Yet, these obstacles have only strengthened her resolve. “The emotional toll is real,” she admits, “but every success story—no matter how small—reminds me why I chose this path.”

Looking ahead, Rumbie envisions a future where her work transcends borders. She dreams of influencing policy reforms and engaging in international initiatives to combat global challenges like poverty and human trafficking. But her ultimate goal remains grounded in her roots: empowering women and girls to reclaim their voices and thrive.
