Wicknell Chivayo has offered brand-new vehicles to the 78 ZIFA councillors voting in today’s election if they back Nqobile Magwizi’s bid for the presidency.
The election, initially seen as a fresh start for Zimbabwean football, has been overshadowed by allegations of vote-buying and manipulation.
Meanwhile, ZIFA presidential candidate Martin Kweza has withdrawn his candidacy after delivering his resignation letter to the ZIFA Normalisation Committee chair, Lincoln Mutasa. Sources claim Kweza was pressured by “shadowy figures” linked to the system, who feared he would split the vote.
This election follows a turbulent period for Zimbabwean football, which suffered a one-year FIFA suspension that disrupted opportunities for players and officials. Magwizi faces stiff competition from candidates Twine Phiri, Marshall Gore, Phillemon Machana, and Makwinji Soma Phiri.
Chivayo has publicly endorsed Magwizi, describing him as a visionary leader capable of transforming the sport. He pledged a $10 million sponsorship for grassroots football development and operational improvements if Magwizi is elected. He also promised Magwizi a $200,000 Toyota Land Cruiser and vehicles for all elected councillors under Magwizi’s leadership.
Critics have condemned Chivayo’s actions as an attempt to manipulate the election outcome. Pastor and businessman Walter Magaya, who was disqualified from the race in December, reportedly reluctantly endorsed Magwizi under pressure from influential figures.
Despite the controversies, football supporters remain optimistic that councillors will prioritize the sport's interests. Harare-based fan Tendai Savanhu expressed hope, citing the 2018 election surprise victory of Felton Kamambo over financial heavyweight Philip Chiyangwa.
