A former councilor for Beatrice Ward 16, Nyashanu Claudious, has been defrauded of US$11,000 by a man who promised to secure him a lucrative US$2 million donation and involved him in recording a song for the SADC Summit that never materialized.

The accused, Gilbert Kanokanga ,49, appeared before Harare Magistrate Apollonia Marutya facing fraud charges. Prosecutor Tinotenda Masimba told the court that Kanokanga approached the 65-year-old war veteran at his Beatrice home in July 2024 with a proposal to collaborate on a SADC Summit song, to which Nyashanu agreed.

Later, Kanokanga claimed he could secure a US$2 million donation from a non-governmental organization for community development projects.

He convinced Nyashanu to pay various amounts for "logistical costs," starting with US$600 for registration fees and US$1,000 for a "Certificate of Youth." Payments continued until the total reached US$11 000.

Kanokanga assured Nyashanu that the funds would be delivered within two weeks in September 2024, but nothing materialized. When Kanokanga became evasive, Nyashanu realized he had been conned and filed a police report.

The court is yet to deliver a verdict on the matter.
