Harare regional magistrate Francis Mapfumo has denied bail to Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s daughter-in-law, who is accused of laundering US$9 million.
Mapfumo said Tafirenyika was “liquid” and had sufficient financial resources to sustain herself anywhere in the world, raising fears that she could abscond if released.
The 22-year-old, who is married to Collins Mnangagwa, was arrested on August 4 and faces drug possession and money laundering charges.

Prosecutors allege that she acquired properties using proceeds from drug dealing, while her lawyers have reportedly argued that the properties were purchased for her by her husband.
The bail ruling comes a week after Tafirenyika, through lawyers Admire Rubaya and Everson Chatambudza, apologised to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa over a dispute involving members of the First Family.
Her lawyers denied that she was involved in any campaign to scandalise the First Family and appealed for an “amicable resolution” to the dispute.
Tafirenyika’s mother, sister and aunt are separately facing drug-related charges.
