A 39-year-old Harare man, Calton Muduwiwa, has been sentenced to six years in prison for defrauding South Africa-based Davure Mining of R440 000 in a botched vehicle importation deal.
Harare regional magistrate Mr. Stanford Mambanje, in a ruling delivered by magistrate Mr. Taurai Manuwere, initially sentenced Muduwiwa to eight years behind bars.
However, one year was suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence, while another year was suspended on the condition that he repays the stolen amount to Davure Mining.
The case dates back to October 20, 2021, when Mr. Masimba Mukarati, Davure Mining’s manager, sought to purchase a Toyota Hilux Legend 50 double-cab from South Africa. Muduwiwa, a trusted friend, offered to assist with the transaction.
Following his instructions, Davure Mining transferred R440 000 to Wish Worthy Investments for the vehicle. However, after the payment was made, Mukarati never received the car. When Muduwiwa became evasive, the matter was reported to the police, leading to his arrest and conviction.
Prosecutor Mr. Ngoni Kaseke called for a harsh sentence, highlighting the significant financial loss and the fact that none of the money had been recovered.
He also noted that Muduwiwa’s betrayal of a friend’s trust worsened the offence.
