Former U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order barring transgender women from participating in female sports categories. The order, which takes immediate effect, applies to high schools, universities, and local sports leagues across the country.
The order directs the Department of Education to ensure compliance in high school sports. Additionally, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has followed suit by banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports. Previously, the NCAA allowed participation under certain testosterone limits.
Trump stated that this policy would extend to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, barring transgender athletes from competing. He also announced plans to deny visas to transgender athletes attempting to enter the U.S. for the event.
Supporters of the order, primarily Republicans, argue that it ensures fairness in women’s sports. However, LGBTQ+ and human rights organizations have condemned the move as discriminatory.
Some sports bodies, including swimming, athletics, and golf, had already implemented similar restrictions for transgender women who underwent male puberty.
Trump defended the order as a measure to "protect women’s sports" and prevent what he described as unfair competition.
