Zimbabwe is set to host the International Handball Federation Trophy Zone VI Women’s Junior and Youth Tournament from April 28 to May 4, 2025, in Harare.
The tournament will bring together top teams from Southern Africa, all competing for a coveted spot in the continental stage of the championship.
In preparation for the event, the Zimbabwe Handball Federation has outlined a structured training plan for the national teams.
Speaking to Zim Now, ZHF General Manager Edson Chirowodza confirmed that the players will enter their first intensive training camp on February 26, with additional camps scheduled for March and early April, culminating in a final camp leading up to the tournament.
“We have 28 players in each category, that is, the under-20s and the under-18s,” Chirowodza stated. He reassured players and coaches that Zimbabwe remains on track with its preparations.
“I believe we are not behind in our preparations, as we started team selection and initial camps last year. Some players are already engaged in gym work and other exercises to maintain fitness. These camps are crucial for team building.”
Despite concerns about the preparation timeline, the Federation remains confident in the team’s progress. A source within the Federation acknowledged the anxiety surrounding the competition but expressed optimism about Zimbabwe’s readiness.
“It’s always tough seeing other countries start training earlier, but we are set to begin preparations soon, and we are confident in our strategy.”
Chirowodza also made an appeal for well-wishers and sponsors to support the team, as the Federation currently lacks a financial partner to fund preparations.
“We need assistance with travel, equipment, and allowances to ensure the team is adequately prepared for this prestigious tournament.”
With the IHF Trophy Zone VI tournament fast approaching, Zimbabwe’s teams will look to capitalize on their training camps and home advantage to deliver strong performances.
The event is set to showcase the talent and determination of young female handball players from across the region as they compete for a place on the continental stage.
