Government has issued an urgent call for families and friends of Zimbabwean nationals who may have gone missing or lost their lives during “Operation Vala Umgodi” in South Africa to assist in identifying the deceased.

This follows the tragic incident at Stilfontein Mine in the Northwest Province, which occurred between August 2024 and January 2025.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, several unidentified bodies remain in South African mortuaries. Authorities are working to ensure the remains are properly identified so that families can be notified and arrangements made for a dignified burial.

Zimbabweans who have missing relatives believed to have been in the affected area are urged to come forward with any relevant information.

Those in Zimbabwe can visit the nearest ZRP station or the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare’s Provincial or District Social Welfare Offices.

Meanwhile, individuals in South Africa can contact the Zimbabwean Consulate in Johannesburg for assistance.

To aid in the identification process, family members and friends are encouraged to provide photographs, medical or dental records, identification documents, or any other distinguishing details that could help confirm the identities of the deceased.
