Update: Chemical poisoning confirmed as four Mwenezi villagers die within two days

Police have confirmed that four people from the same village in Mwenezi died within two days of each other after they all suffered the same signs and symptoms were victims of chemical poisoning.

“Post mortem was done and it was established that death was due to chemical toxicity. Investigations are underway,” the police said in a statement.

Flora Siziba, 56, of Masisinyani village in the Mateke Hills area died last and her mother Raila Gula, 90, died at home within a few hours of each other on Friday, November 25.

A neighbour of unknown age who visited the Siziba’s home when he learnt of the deaths, Thomas Ndavani is said to have died a few minutes after his arrival.

All three deceased complained of acute stomach pains, then experience profuse perspiration and vomiting before succumbing.

Police attended the scene and removed the bodies of all three the same day.

The next day, Saturday, November 26, Shepherd Mukachana who was a son-in-law to Siziba and lived at the same homestead also started experiencing stomach pains.

Another relative, daughterin-law to Siziba, Vimbai Chirelele also experienced some signs and symptoms.

Both Mukachana and Chirelele were taken to Gezani clinic where they were treated and discharged.

Muchakana’s condition later worsened and he also suffered severe stomach pains then went on to perspire heavily and vomit before he too died.

Chirelele is said to be stable condition and recovering at home.

Mukachana’s body has also been taken in for a post-mortem.

Police said that investigations are underway and have indicated that there suspicions of food poisoning.
