Three men have been arraigned before the courts following a major drug and liquor bust in Harare, in which authorities seized over 4.5 tonnes of dagga valued at more than US$549 600.

The suspects, identified as Lloyd Matamba, Michael Alfaneta, and Justice Mahope, were arrested on March 9 after detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit raided a warehouse on Citroen Road in Msasa.

The operation, based on intelligence reports, also uncovered various liquor brands worth an estimated US$50,000.

The trio appeared in court facing charges of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs and selling liquor without a license.

A field test confirmed that the seized dagga contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis.
Prosecutors strongly opposed bail, arguing that the accused pose a flight risk due to the severity of the charges.

The State further submitted that the strength of the evidence, the ongoing investigation into possible witness tampering, and the likelihood of the accused resuming their illicit activities if released justified their continued detention.

The matter has been postponed to March 14 for a bail ruling.
