As we celebrate Women’s Month, the non-governmental organization Perfect Symphony is empowering women by highlighting a crucial aspect of their health—thyroid wellness.
Hormone wellness coach and founder of Perfect Symphony, Ms. Tatenda Makayi, emphasized the importance of a healthy thyroid gland during an interview with Zim Now reporter Rudo Mandiro.
“A well-functioning thyroid is vital for hormone regulation, energy levels, and overall well-being,” Makayi said. “The right diet can support thyroid function and help keep you feeling your best.”
She encouraged women to take charge of their health by nourishing their bodies with thyroid-friendly foods.
The thyroid gland, a tiny butterfly-shaped organ in the neck, is a powerhouse that regulates metabolism, energy levels, mood, and weight. When out of balance—whether underactive or overactive—it can lead to fatigue, weight fluctuations, and other health concerns.
In celebration of Women’s Month, Makayi shared five nutrient-rich foods that naturally support thyroid function:
1. Eggs: Nature’s Multivitamin
“Eggs are packed with protein, healthy fats, and essential vitamins,” Makayi explained. “Most importantly, they contain iodine, a critical mineral needed for thyroid hormone production.”
2. Ghee: An Ayurvedic Secret for Hormone Balance
Makayi highlighted ghee, a staple in Ayurvedic medicine, as a beneficial food for thyroid health.
“Many women fear fats, but the right kinds of fat are essential for hormone balance,” she said. “Ghee contains cholesterol, which plays a key role in hormone production, including thyroid hormones. Its omega-3 fatty acids also help reduce inflammation, a hidden culprit in thyroid dysfunction.”
3. Unrefined Salt: A Simple but Powerful Switch
Makayi recommended swapping regular table salt for unrefined options like Himalayan pink salt, which contains trace minerals that support thyroid function.
“This simple switch can make a big difference,” she noted. “Unrefined salt aids digestion and nutrient absorption, benefiting both thyroid health and overall well-being.”
4. Coconut Oil: A Natural Metabolism Booster
“Coconut oil is one of the best natural ways to boost metabolism,” Makayi said. “It’s a great addition to cooking and baking, giving your thyroid the support it needs.”
5. Yogurt: A Source of Vitamin D for Thyroid Function
Makayi also recommended yogurt, particularly varieties fortified with vitamin D.
“Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to thyroid issues, so making sure you get enough is crucial for overall hormone balance,” she advised.
While these foods provide a natural boost for thyroid health, Makayi emphasized the importance of a holistic approach—reducing processed foods, managing stress, limiting sugar intake, and cutting back on alcohol—to support optimal thyroid function.
“This Women’s Month, I encourage every woman to take charge of her well-being,” she said. “By making mindful choices, we can empower ourselves to feel energized, balanced, and strong.”
